I emailed him the list of terms for students from 10th kyu and up in Japanese, Spanish and English with a glossary of movements and directions using the infinitive form of the word which is a "soft" instruction instead of having to use the imperative plural and individual forms.

Our dojo has had a recent influx of folks who speak mainly Spanish and little to no English. Does anyone have, or know of, an English to Spanish list of karate terms? I have a hard enough time teaching while using words. It is much more challenging using demonstration only and I would love to be able to communicate more effectively. I am working on my basic anatomical vocabulary, and this is helpful. However, it would be great to have terms like "high block" instead of the Spanish equivalent of "arm high".

Chris

Hi, I speak Spanish, my best friend is a Japanise. Please add me to your messenger (if you have one in hotmail) and maybe we can fix your little problem. By the way:

Block = Bloqueo
High Block = Bloqueo Alto
(Arm High = Brazo arriba)
Middle Block = Bloqueo Medio
Low Block= Bloqueo bajo
Side Block = Bloqueo lateral
Kick = Patada
High Kick = Patada alta
Middle Kick = Patada media
Low kick = Patada baja
Roundhouse kick = Patada circular
Back kick = Patada hacia atras
Strike = Golpe
Fist = Puño
Punch = Puñetazo
Forward punch = Puñetazo frontal
Hammer fist = Puño de martillo
Back fist = Dorso del puño
Ridge Hand Strike = Golpe con Espinazo de mano
Side = lado
Form = Forma
Breathing = Respiracion
Moving = Movimiento
Stances = Distancias
Evasion = Evasion
Falling = Caidas

Did I forget something? ... Confused

Believe it or not "cerveza" is actually a Celtic word in origin.

Just as Izquierda (left) is derived from the Arabic whilst Derecha (right) is full Spanish/Latin origin. Cool Laughing

Hola,

I am Spanish but I don't think I can be of any help since complete and useful lists of terms have been already added to this thread.

Nevertheless, I would say that Japansese should be the universal languaje for Karate. If you say 'patada' (kick), only Spanish speakers will understand you. But if you say 'mae-geri' every karateka should understand what you are refering to. That is because we commonly use the Japanese terms. The use of Japanese terms allows us to communicate perfectly and naturally with any karateka regardless of where he/she comes from, so it makes life easier.

In case it is of any help I have a Spanish website about Shotokan Karate. Maybe they can find useful information there and check what they learn in your classes.
There is a Japanese/Spanish vocabulary section.
This book could be very useful too -> Diccionario del Karate Shotokan.
